Leadership changes are hard! They impact staff, board, and stakeholders. We can help you get the support you need whether your organization is in crisis or simply planning ahead.

Methods

There are many aspects to our board & transition support work. Some common ways we work with clients include:

Systems Analysis & Improvement

Variable hourly rate starting at $250 $350/hour for large organizations and foundations

Do you need help organizing your processes? Does your team need project management software, a CRM, or other tracking systems in place to organize their work, but you don’t know where to start? We'll have a clarifying conversation about how you work, what's working for you, and what needs to change. We’ll perform an analysis of your current systems and research solutions tailored to your business. We'll come up with a suite of systems to keep you organized and make your life easier, as well as implement these systems with your staff to set you up for success. This can take anywhere from 20-80+ hours of work time depending on what you do and what you need, so we'll assess during our consultation.

Succession & Transition Planning

Variable hourly rate starting at $200 $350/hour for large organizations and foundations

Whether a leader at your entity is retiring next year, or you’re a director getting ready to make a move to a new career path next quarter, succession and transition planning is absolutely key to ensuring that you leave your position in a place of strength for the next person to take it on. We will provide an analysis of what needs to be planned, work with you to provide support in necessary documentation, create an accessible storage system for your plans and materials, create training materials and an onboarding plan for your successor, and even help to smoothly transition your successor with coaching.

We support boards and executives to ensure smooth transitions when senior leaders leave the organization. We need a minimum of 4 months to complete this work; 6 months minimum for a CEO/ED, though optimally, we’d be given 10 months time.

Interim Support

Work in Progress Consulting offers interim director support to organizations navigating a leadership transition. Our team steps in with experienced interim leaders who understand the unique dynamics and urgency of movement-centered work. We provide immediate operational stability while centering organizational values, staff wellness, and mission continuity. Whether your organization needs temporary executive-level oversight or strategic facilitation during a director vacancy, our approach is trauma-informed, equity-centered, and deeply collaborative. We aim to reduce disruption, maintain funder and board relationships, and support staff morale during this critical period.

In addition to day-to-day leadership and oversight, our interim support includes organizational assessment, staff engagement, and succession planning. We work closely with boards, staff, and stakeholders to identify what the organization needs in its next phase of leadership and help lay the groundwork for a sustainable and inclusive hiring process. From stabilizing operations to facilitating healing conversations and clarifying leadership priorities, our interim directors bring not only expertise, but also care and commitment to the communities being served.

How We Work:

We help guide a process that works for you, aims to reduce your stress, and produces a plan you and your team can implement or we can guide for you. Based on your needs, we can include engaging stakeholders and the community in focus groups, or researching solutions that are outside of the box for your team.

“WIP tailored their consulting to my specific needs and unique circumstances, and helped me understand the importance of amplifying my unique vision as an artist and creator, rather than only focusing on cookie cutter solutions. I'm really grateful to have worked with an agency that really aligns with my values while offering real world, practical advice for a growing business.”
